Alternative Treatments for Dealing With Fibromyalgia

Anxiety and depression are hardly rare, especially these days. However, if these situations are accompanied by chronic pain throughout your body, if even a slight touch causes pain and discomfort and if you're having problems concentrating and remembering things, you may be suffering from fibromyalgia.
This is a condition that affects approximately 3% of the population, and the overwhelming majority of victims are women. There is no cure for this condition at present - mainly because medical researchers are not clear what it is - but there ways of providing chronic relief.
Other Symptoms
In addition to pain and mental confusion, patients with this condition may also experience:
- sleep difficulties
- irritable bowel syndrome or other LGI issues
- numbness or tingling
- low blood sugar levels
- difficulty urinating
- muscle spasms
- heart palpitations
For most people suffering from fibromyalgia, relief is the top priority, however.
What Causes It?
Unfortunately, medical researchers are not clear as to what causes fibromyalgia. Some believe it is nothing more that a psychological condition; a physical examination usually reveals nothing out of the ordinary. It has been associated with rheumatoid arthritis as well as lupus, both of which are inflammatory conditions.
Current theory suggests that it may be caused by a condition that makes the brain hypersensitive to pain signals, resulting in a much lower-than-normal pain threshold. Some individuals may be genetically predisposed as well; researchers have noticed that it runs in families. Another culprit is a dysfunction when it comes to the secretion of chemical neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin.
Fibromyalgia Pain Relief
Psychotherapy has been shown to be effective in some cases; patients who undergo this type of alternative pain relief therapy greatly benefit from an exercise program as well. Pharmaceutical treatments include: the use of anti-depressants, anti-seizure medication, dopamine replacements, tranquilizers and even opioid medications. However, any and all of these can produce unwanted side effects; the latter in particular has the potential to create dependency.
Alternative Pain Relief
Increasingly, non-pharmaceutical alternative pain relief methods are showing exceptional promise. New research demonstrates that the human body has an amazing ability to heal itself. Natural, non-chemical chronic pain relief can be stimulated through the use of massage (something that indigenous peoples have known for centuries) as well as the use of light and sound. One exciting development is the use of magnets. While magnetic energy does little on its own, when used in combination with these other elements, it has been demonstrated to provide fast and effective fibromyalgia pain relief in chronic sufferers.
